Hi there
I'm about to buy a new car. I'm thinking Volvo C30 or S40. I've had a S40 for years and its been fab!
Are there any good websites to buy direct for cheaper prices?
In fact im interested in any hints or tips to get a good deal as i've never bought a new car before.
Thanks for any pointers

Which part of the Country do you live? In the Midlands, there is a showroom called Motorpoint http://www.motorpoint.co.uk which offers great deals on *new* cars with 5 to 10 miles on the clock.0 -
Here's some advice: Don't

Thanks His_lordship I am in the midlands so i'll check out that site now.
Jamief what do you mean...dont? What buy a volvo, or any new car? I'd like to buy one thats possibly ex demo or something so I can save a bit of money but still get a new(ish) car. I keep my cars for many years so im thinking that going new or nearly new would be best?0 -
Just be a bu99er to the salesperson - they want the sale so will do a heck of a lot to make it. I went in at the end of the month when they have targets to reach and was able to move mountains!
Just pick the spec of the car you want and deduct a few extras that you chose. Ask for the price of the car without the extras, then tell the salesperson you will buy the car here and now if they give you say £1k off and add the extras. It's a big ask but if they want the sale they'll do it. if they say no then go in a couple of days later (in the same month) and try someone else, possibly the sales manager if you can get them.
Make sure they throw in things like breakdown cover and car mats. Tell them you want the car by x date and ensure you agree free borrowing of a car from them if they can't meet that date.
If I think of anything else I'll let you know....0 -
My car came from Motorpoint and a number of friends have since bought from them too. My car was 5 months old, had less than 2000 on the clock and had only been registered to Vauxhall. Very, very good price. Well worth a look - try their website first.

Sorry Angelina-M, should of been a little more specific

By all means get a Volvo; very nice reliable cars. I meant don't buy a new one, unless you have an overwhelming reason to do so. I just feel that losing XX% of the value of the car (which can be upto about 30%) the second you leave the showroom isn't good business, and of course, this is a money saving forum! Id shop around, see if you can find one that is 1 or 2 years old, you'll make a huge saving and can very often still get warranties on used cars.0 -

Thanks guys, lots of good info there.
My partner is also looking to buy a volvo but he wants a v70. He's been talking to the local volvo dealership and they have offered him one with 14000 on the clock, 06 model for 20k. Whilst checking out the recommendations on here i've found these two: http://www.motorpoint.co.uk/(S(ndtk3sirge0eqt554gm0qwqb))/Search/VehicleDetails.aspx?vehicle=129083 this one is same engine etc. And this one: http://www.autobytel.co.uk/NewCars/NewCarDetails.aspx?Car=36123 which is a huge saving off the new price.
These seem really good deals and im able to make a direct comparison as we have already priced up for his v70.
I've also found nearly £2000 saving on the autobytel for an s40 for me! At that price saving I may as well have a brand spanking new one as the dealership only knocks a couple of grand off when selling their ex demos.
There's definately deals to be had by shopping around!
Thanks again0 -
Try https://www.drivethedeal.com I can recommend them.0

I had a good experience with Broadspeed.
A lot depends upon the manufacturer of the car. Broadspeed found me dealers who could offer discounts of:
3500 on Citroen C4
2700 on BMW 1-series
700 on Honda Civic.
By comparison, the best I could get from Dealers contacted directly was:
1500 on Citroen C4 (and worse trade in of 500 less)
1600 on BMW 1-series
500 on Honda Civic
When I looked at nearly new prices, I could save maybe 3000 for a year old car with 10,000 miles from BMW or Honda (the Citroen being too new to get this way).
Though the broker arranges a fixed price, you can still negotiate on the extras. I took tyre insurance through the dealer for 100, down from 350. The dealer also tried to sell return-to-invoice gap insurance for 450, which I shopped around for, and eventually got for 141 from Click4Gap.0
