I can't do my job

Hello,
I work in IT and started working for a large corp about 18 months ago. About three months ago I managed to gain promotion into a more senior/technical position, in a different discipline from my area of expertise.

Unfortunately I believe that I am ill suited to the new job, and do not feel that I have received the level of support or on the job training to become competent at the role. Morale is very low within the team due to low staffing levels/high staff turnover, the more experienced members of the team are often too busy to spend any meaningful amount of time explaining/teaching the specifics of the job.

I have felt incredibly stressed and have raised concerns with my manager, however these do not appear to have been addressed, and I do not feel he always has the best interests of his staff at heart. More disturbingly, I was also recently blamed for a number of things which went wrong, which later transpired not to have been attributable to fault or neglect on my part.

The day after being hauled over the coals regarding the above, I suffered a grand mal seizure, which I believe was caused by stress. This has caused me immense inconvenience at a personal level as I have had to stop driving until I have been fit free for a year.

I have made it clear that I wish to return to my previous job in another department within the company at the earliest possible opportunity. My previous boss is more than happy for this to happen, and there is a position vacant, though the interdepartmental transfer will take six weeks to complete :(

I have recently returned to work and am back to feeling extremely stressed. I am getting splitting headaches, feeling generally ill, which in turn is fuelling a vicious cycle as it is resulting in me finding my job even more difficult. I feel as though I am performing badly and am a burden to my colleagues.

I am not sure that I can manage this for six weeks, what options are open to me? I feel that my health is genuinely suffering as a result of my job.

  • I would have thought that any company which takes 6 weeks to effect a transfer between departments must be big enough to have a dedicated personell dept, shouldnt they be dealing with this?

So - previous boss wants you back, current boss doesn't want you, and you don't want current boss?

In those circumstances, I'd be tempted to ignore my current job completely, and find out from previous boss who I needed to lean on to get the transfer to happen asap - and then go lean on them hard. In the meantime, I'd ask previous boss if he had any work he'd like me to do, and current boss if he'd mind if I did it.

If you just have one seizure, you only have to wait for six months. You only have to wait a year if you have multiple seizures and/or epilepsy.

Do you have an OH service at work, can they expedite your return to your previous role?
