is there any way round the Natwest's policy of basing mortgage on older of a couple ?

We have a mortgage with the Natwest. It runs out on my OH's 70th birthday in Feb, but it's a joint mortgage and I am a year younger than he is. They want us to have wound up mortgage and repaid them the remaining amount by Feb, but I won't be 70 for another year so why can't they extend it till I am 70 ? They say they don't do this - has anyone known this to happen ever ? I would like to know so that I can wage war if I have to but wondered if anyone has met this situation ?

Normal practice has always been to set maximum term on oldest applicant. Otherwise the permutations of age differential borrowers are endless. A line has to be drawn in the sand at a given point.

I assume this was the critria and term as detailed in your original mge offer ....

Unless there are exceptional circs why it can't be repaid until a yr later, you may well be stuck with the original terms you entered into.

I can only suggest popping into your local branch and having a chat with the branch manager, whom may be able to achieve an extension based on your circs and affordability, its worth a shot, but I have to be honest be prepared for them to refuse ....

    Hope this helps
