I sent OH to Sainsbury's to pick up this the other day for a huuugggge trifle I was making: http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/sol/shop/home_and_garden/tableware/117458795_tu_glass_serving_bowl.html?hnav=4294966799

It was only £6.66 in store! :j

Edited to add: they also have small glass bowls which might be good for Prawn Cocktail, depending on how many you'd need - http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/sol/shop/home_and_garden/tableware/117459915_tu_clear_glass_small_footed_dessert_bowl.html?hnav=4294966799

bright coloured plastic bowls from Pound Land and here

Or you could just serve everything in empty margarine tubs!

  • What about this bowl from Asda for your trifle for £7? (Possibly have more ideas in store)

As suggested before, large wine glasses are ideal for prawn cocktail.
Some quite nice coloured ones at only £1 each, if you don't already have large wine glasses.

    wow. snob much?!

I serve prawn cocktail in 1970s metal wine glasses, they're terrible for wine but are a great talking point. they're also not everyone's cup of tea, but that's because most people see them in a shop and think "oh my goodness, why have metal goblets?!"

they're like this only not engraved...

check out charity shops for large bowls if you're on a budget or can't bring yourself to spend £25 on ONE BOWL.
  • Dunelm might have something suitable for the prawn cocktail.
I got ice cream sundae glasses in there for my ice cream hamper.

In case anyone is interested my ice cream hamper has sprinkles, sauce brandy snap baskets, cones, the glasses, long spoons and a scoop.
All that needs adding is ice ream. Hope my kids enjoy it!

  • I understand that Lidl have one at £9.99 but I have been to the three closest to me and they are sold out. My friend's description made it sound like the one Nigel Slater used for his lemon and clementine curd trifle i.e. straight sided, quite deep and with a stem (like the M&S one too). I have the Asda one but it is too shallow to do a trifle properly I feel.

Metal goblets are a darn sight classier than the 4 for a £1 plastic bowls linked to!

It was worth £25 to me (I got 25% off though, so £18.75) not to have to traipse around charity/cheap shops looking for something that 'would do'.

  • Does anyone in the family, or a friend have something suitable you could borrow for the day? I got some lovely little bowls in Tesco's a couple of years ago (similar to the Sainsbury's one linked above, but individual portion size) that I orginally bought for making 'pots of gold' with, but really actually also wanted an excuse to buy them because I knew they'd make lovely bowls to put individual trifles in.

If someone in my family was kind enough to invite me round for dinner, I'd be only too happy (flattered even!) to be asked if I had anything suitable that could be borrowed. They've been used approximately, let me see, hmm, once since I bought them, and to see them used again would cheer me greatly. In fact, if you're in Devon, pm me, and I'll see what I can do. Never underestimate the amount of crockery and glasssware an older lady can accumulate in a lifetime!
