£6k council tax debt!!!!

Hi there,

Need some advice. I got a letter today from Walker love It was addressed to me and my wife stating that we owe £6k in council tax debt. Im thinking the debt came from a property i lived in about 9 years ago. My problem is that this is the first im hearing about the debt and wondering why its in my wife name too as we only got married in october 2010 and hadn't lived together before we got married so how can her name be on the letter too. I didnt even know her 9 years ago. I had already recieved a letter from walker love this year for a payment of about £400 which i was set to pay to clear off this years council tax but then this came through today and has me stumped. Can i ask walker love to prove the debt and ask them for individual breakdowns and also i dont want my wifes Credit rating hit because of my stupidity so can i send a prove it in her name and can i ask them for a copy of any liability orders. Just not sure what the best course of action is.

  • contact walker love and tell them you want to query how the amount has accrued. They should have the information or will redirect you to the council. Alternatively get onto them first thing yourself as you need to sort this to stop further costs being incurred

£6k is going to cover a number of years and liability orders so I am amazed you say this is the first you have heard about it and if it is over 9 years ago I would be very surprised that a council would have left it until now unless they have only just been able to trace you. Your wife could only be joint and severally liable for the debt if she was with you when the charge accrued. However as married if they seek to levy on goods as a married couple they could take goods you own in settlement of the debt but not attach her earnings
  • The council have known where i've been since 2007, i lived in a council house and had HB and CTC so its not as if i was hiding. So its a bit of a suprise that this has dropped now and for 6k out of the blue.
