How do you put up outdoor xmas lights?

Probably a silly question but I've never done it before. I've bought some of the led lights that hang down like icicles but have no idea how to attach them to the house. Can you split the wire and bang a nail through or is there a special way?

Sorry to sound clueless

i have hooks that are double ended so one side hangs over the guttering and I hook the lights into the other end..if that makes sense. i think these hooks were with the outdoor lights in the DIY store..
