in Cutting tax
I started work in feb 2011 after leaving uni, i was only at that work place two months and left to start another job where I still am now, but since starting my first job i've had the tax code 747 M1, I've read this is an emergency code, but I'm unsure to what I should do, do I need to contact HMRC? I'm useless with this sort of thing.

Did you complete a P46 when you changed jobs or handed in your P45?
747 M1 means £7479 tax free but treat it as month 1.0 -
Handed in my P45. I'm on the same code as when I started my first job, its now 10 months and i'm still on the emergency code.0

Then you need to contact HMRC to get it resolved.
But it's unlikely to be causing any problems - unless your pay varies wildly. As you're getting your full allowances - but on a non cumulative basis. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
I get the same pay each month so it doesn't very at all. I'll contact them when I get home. Thanks0

Should have added - if you had no other employment in 10-11 other than those 2 months? Then any tax deducted should be refundable - if you were under the personal allowance of £6475.
Pick that up at the same time ..... if you haven't had a refund (via P800 already)If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
I've had no refund...i worked my first job feb until 1st april, then moved to my current job on 2nd april. No other jobs and been on same 747 M1 code all the way through.0

Then any tax deducted in that first job should be refundable. Provided your total taxable income in 10-11 was less than £6475.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0

Yep i think it was less than that. I'll check it out when I get home.0
