Problems with HMRC

I have also received a P800 letter.
I took ill health retirement in July 2010 and in November of this year, received the letter. Apparently I have underpaid in 2010/2011 by £536.40. I wrote querying this and received the reply that it was because I had received full tax allowances in my employment, until leaving and then when my pension started, I also received them, meaning that I received the allowances twice. Furthermore, basic rate tax code was issued to my pension provider on a week 1 basis, but the cumulative code previously issued had already been operated. These full tax allowances are just my union subs, so its nothing spectacular.
I am really cross about this, but I don't think I can do anything about it. Just fume that it's all been left so long to accumulate and that I now owe a substantial (to me) amount of money.
They apologise for the inconvenience caused...

When you finished work - your P45 should have been sent on to your pension provider? That way it would normally all work out.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0

Yes I know and that's what I don't understand. I want to point the finger of blame at someone(!), but don't know who that lucky individual/organisation should be. As I said in my previous post, I'm really cross about this and feel it should have been noted sooner.
Oh well...I'm not going to win this one, so will just have to grin and bear it. Grrrrr!0 -

The P45 should have been given to you to send on! But I won't point the finger - as it's the only one that seems to work the keyboard properly.
Unless the pension provider was directly associated with your employer - when normally payroll do the job .... and tell you.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
The two things don't necessarily follow. Did you complete a P161 (Pension Coding)? Or notify HMRC if you didn't get one :

No as I never knew I was supposed to. The only contact I made was to the DWP with my claim being made by telecon.0 -
And normally DWP would then advise HMRC they'd started to pay a (taxable) State Pension. But not where they don't have a link to tax details for you.
But where you get a further and taxable income stream ...... down to you to follow it up?If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Finally today my partner has had a letter from HMRC regarding his self employment account to 2009 when he retired.
A long story with complications but at last they have adjusted and credited his account.
This is with some relief as he has been hounded by Fairfax Solicitors almost daily by phone loads of letters of demand to pay , he has paid a few installments due to this pressure but as he is on a limited income it has been difficult in funding these payments.
There has been times of frustration with HMRC being so slow in addressing this problem but now at last we see some light.!Light travels faster than sound.
This is why some people seem as bright until you hear them.0 -

I have today phoned the HMRC and they advise the £201.84 has now been traced. They are sending me a letter of apology and a cheque for £112.00 as it turns out I had overpaid for the year 2009/10.
