Which mattress topper will add softness to a firm mattress?

I recently bought a new mattress, a Flexcell pocket 1000. Which is a memory foam and pocket sprung mattress.

My parents have the same mattress and after spending a week at theirs, house sitting, I was convinced that this was the mattress for me. Very very comfortable.

I ordered my mattress and have had it for approx 2 months but find that it's not as comfortable as I recall. It seems much firmer than my parents and I am suffering a lot from upper back pain - the part of the back that curves slightly into the mattress when you put your head on a pillow. I lie on my back.

Over recent weeks, I have tried all sorts of things to see if I can reduce the firmness. I have removed the mattress protector, I have changed pillows, trying flat ones, memory foam ones, fluffy polyester ones, hard polyester ones and nothing seems to work.

I am now considering getting a mattress topper. I used to have a natural filling mattress topper from ikea and it was fantastic however they don't seem to sell them anymore. Everything seems to be either memory foam or feather.

I don't think a feather topper is for me - too faffy and I can't see that it would make that much difference.

I have 4 options on the table. The Sultan Tafjord or the Sultan Tjome from Ikea (I have an ikea bedframe). Alternatively john lewis have a memory foam or a memory foam & microfibre topper.

Any thought on whether any of these options would be suitable? Or should I be looking at something completely different?

Any advice would be appreciated.

If your parents have the same mattress and you did like, are you putting your mattress on the same type of base as your parents. If they have a divan sprung base and you have a solid base then the mattress will feel different.

What type of bed base do you currently have? Sorry just read Ikea Frame. If it's a divan and solid, maybe you could consider a sprung edge divan base. 4ft6 shouldn;t cost much more then about £150, plus £50 for set of drawers if needed.

Just a thought as toppers can be an expensive option.

We recently bought a memory foam one for something like £50 from Argos, and it included a pair of pillows. It has transformed the bed.
