You can get Compatibles for £13 black and £14 colour, there is also an option to refill by post for £7 black and £9 colour. Using it for document printing will be fine, though could prove expensive for photos as it has a combined colour cartridge, any image which has a lot of one colour, will use that colour then the cartridge has to be replaced regardless of the remaining colours left in the cartridge.
" This is a particular problem if you print a lot of one colour. For example, if you're photos contain large expanses of sky, you'll use more cyan ink. You would have to replace the whole colour cartridge when the cyan ran out, even if there was plenty of magenta and yellow left. In the long run, this can increase your printing costs. "

" Some inkjet printers have a black ink tank and a combined one for the three colour inks cyan, yellow and magenta that are used. When one of these colour inks is depleted, you’ll have to replace all three ink tanks – wasteful and expensive. However, if you rarely print in colour anyway and are buying a cheap printer, you may not mind this."

If you post the type of printing you need it for, and how important scan quality is, someone may have a printer they use which is suitable0 -

Thanks very much for taking the time to advise, Santer. I appreciate your comments and linked advice too. Scan quality not important (I only use black ink) but as shared with daughters who have various colour printing needs, was looking for an all in one that was not ink greedy (like most people) and quality acceptable. I have no need for a fax. Perhaps that's asking too much. I've got an expired Epson stylus CX2300, bought 2002 (I know, ancient) and I have to say it performed well when alive! No problems whatsoever.
Are individual inks cost effective overall, i.e.4 slot in types?
Recommendations from experience welcomed. Thanks.0 -
I have printers which use from 4 to 9 cartridges, and being able to replace just the colour needed rather than a combined unit, is for me, cheaper.
If the various colour printing needs include photo printing, then a printer which uses 6 or more inks will produce better results, though I have a 4 ink Epson SX415 which produces acceptable results using best print settings and good quality paper
Epson printers usually have a better availability of compatibles
This is £25

And will use these compatibles
