HGV Driver CPC training

Options
Hi. I am a lorry driver and will need to take my Driver CPC at some point in the next couple of years but would like to get it done before there is a mad rush in 2013 and the prices go up accordingly.

I've been out of the job for a couple of years so will be needing a training company who has their own vehicle for the driver assessment part of the course.

Does anyone know of any good training companies in Yorkshire? I'm kind of in the middle of NSEW Yorkshire and travelling isn't an issue as you may expect. :)

  • There is no driver assessment part for CPC. You can do anything that an accredited centre provides for CPC. This can and often does include First Aid, Health & Safety, Manual Handling, SAFED, Safe Loading. As long as it adds up to 35 hours, is CPC approved and from a CPC accredited provider. For example First Aid at Work - 18 hours lasts for 3 years so retake it after 3 years = 36 hours within the 5 years.

if you are coming back on the road why not take an ADR course, this widens your scope for work and also counts towards your cpc

  • Thanks for the information about the driving part - I'll get looking around then. I think I'm going to book a day with a driving school before looking for jobs just to get the feel of it again before going back.

I thought about the ADR but TBH if the situation is like it used to be, you pay out a lot of money to do it but the pay rates aren't enhanced enough to compensate unless you can get onto fuel tankers and the nearest to me is over 60 miles away so not really any good for commuting no matter how much I like driving :D

its not really that expensive, i paid £450 18 months ago to renew mine and its not just tanker work that you can use it for, a lot of bulk goods come under ADR.

  • Hi im new to this site, what does adr and cpc mean?
  • ADR - certification for carrying hazardous loads such as chemicals, explosives, nuclear. CPC - Certificate of Professional Competency that basically says you know the basics such as how to secure loads, check vehicles, drivers hours regulations, health and safety etc and is 35hrs training over a 5 year period either all at once or over 5 sessions. All HGV Drivers who have passed their test since its introduction have to have one before they can be employed as a HGV driver - HGV drivers who already had a licence have until 2014 to take it under grandfather rights, the position I am in.

The CPC is far far more than you covered in your driving and theory test. You didn't do EU drivers hours, how to do a full check, how to use chains, ratchet straps to secure a load, how to load a vehicle etc in the theory and test.

You HAVE NO CHOICE but to do it if you want to be employed as a lorry driver as you cannot be employed as a lorry driver until you've got it.

Looking around prices vary but seem to be around a few hundred quid.
