tae kwon do

My son has started tae kwon do clases. I am shocked at the cost, but he really enjoys it. Its £35 per month, £23 licence, £23 for gradings and the uniform is expensive too. Are these prices reasonable? Are other martial arts classes the same? I'd love to know.

that sounds expensive but it depends where you are in the country and what level your teacher is. Round here (Oxfordshire) it's about £24 - £28 for 8 lessons depending on where you are, often the first lesson is free and you don't need a uniform until you know you're going to carry it on. Registration is required after 6 weeks at some places but not others (although I'd get it). Google your other local clubs and you'll have more of an idea if that's right for your area.0

Glad I done a serach on this. My two boys just started last week, and we weren't sure of the costs involved. Their class was free for the first week and £3 thereafter. Do you normally have to buy suits direct from the clubs as I have seen a few online shops that do them for between £10 and £15 preprinted on the back..

This sounds expensive,my son has been doing this for many years & has just got his 2nd uniform as his was too small. It cost about £14, his classes are £2.50 per week, gradings are £11 plus £3.50 for his new colour belt, can't remember what I pay for licence.
I used to complain at the cost but I won't any more after reading this0 -
This expense is the reason why my ex girlfriend gave up TKD in Whitley Bay because the governing body, the British TKD association wants each club to be run under their guidelines, which is happening more and more in martial arts.
it became like taking driving lessons where you paid for a set of lessons and when it was up you either quit or paid for another block and the aim is to get you through your gradings ASAP so you can open your own classes and make the TKD Association some more money.
There seems to be very little practical application and I can only go buy what my ex was being taught and some of the guys I have trained with at seminars but the real-life applications were laughable.
TKD is a sport now, unless your kids are interested in tournaments, its a fitness and confidence booster.
I started Lau Gar Kung Fu when I was 22 (late starter). I phoned the instructor and told him I wasnt interested in tournments or gradings, but I was into the practical applications of the self defence and the traditional Chinese martial Arts forms (also known to some as KATAS or patterns).
He was fine with it, i watched one class, took one for free and I currently pay £3.20 per class, £11 a year insurance/membership to IFMA and it costs me £15 to take a grading and I take them when I feel ready, not when they come around.
Our uniforms are sensibly priced but theres no hassle if you wanna train in tracks/t-shirt too.
If I miss a class, its cool, I havent lost any money and we're not working to a strict syllabus. I currently hold a purple sash (2 down from a black) and I have done this at my own pace.
It might be worth investigating some other MA clubs around your area, by phone, reccomendation etc and see just how money hungry they are.
Real teachers, who love their art, will charge enough to run the club on. Theres TONS of forms of MA, it depends on what your kids want out of it.
by the way, the site for our club is https://www.kuei-ling.co.uk
