Party food

It is my daughter's party on the 10th March and I want to get ahead of myself rather than panicking on the day. My idea is to basically have just the sandwiches to do on the day. So I was planning on making and freezing :- sausage rolls, pizza fingers, cakes, biscuits, mini quiches....... that's where I run out of ideas. I want things to be as good as they can nutritionally so will be doing dips (not sure which ones) with carrot sticks etc. I would be really grateful for any hints, tips, ideas etc. Also do I cook the sausage rolls and things before freezing? Or freeze, defrost, cook?

gargoyle, how old's your daughter? Even 10 - 15 yrs ago I found kids didn't really eat sandwiches at parties. They seem to prefer what we ue=sed to call bits and pieces. Absolute favourite was when I used to leave the food to them ie I bought pizza bases[small ones] and prepared all sorts of stuff for the toppings ie sweetcorn, cheese, onion, tomato, sliced meat, peppers and then left them to create own pizzas and then we cooked them. Afters was a homemade ice cream factory......the girls always loved that esp since lots of mums won't let them in the kitchen. Another favourite was bread making...I made the dough and then they put it into shapes including hedgehogs with spikes , let it rise and bake it

She'll be 7 and we have hired a hall if that helps. It's a rock and roll theme aswell.

    so homemad pizzas aren't possible....
I'd concentrate on finger food. I'd cook then freeze...that way its out of freezer, defrost and hey presto its already.

I found that the kids were not interested in sandwiches at my daughters 8th birthday so next time I did a bits and pieces buffet. This included sausages, bits of cheddar and leciester cheese, pineapple cubes ( no sticks !!) grapes, clementine segments, cherry toms. strips of pitta bread, breadstix, salsa, ritz carackers, carrot and cucumber stix, variety of crisps and biscuits. This is very easy and can work out quite cheap as well. Paige XX

I don't have children but hosted a childrens xmas party for children of friends and family at my house. I largely did the food already suggested but I can suggest a wonderful sandwich solution. I purchased a canape maker - looks really tacky and can't honestly think of anything I use it for in relation to an adult party but it was perfect for the childrens sandwiches. There are four shapes - round, square, oval, triangle. You make a sandwich as normal and then cut out the small bite size shapes. Used a differnt shape for each filling. Went down really well with the kids because they didn't really see them as sandwiches. Phone number to order is 01754 764200 £4 including P&P - money well spent.

I also find that using biscuit cutters for sandwiches is a winner ....

If you want to be really organised (and have freezer space!) you could do sandwiches ahead of time and freeze them too-just remember to take them out of the freezer the night before!

We also had fruit kebab at DD 7th birthday party and all the children loved it. It added colour to the food display and very healthy. Crispy cakes and prawn crackers were also popular.
