Working overseas on rotation

some friendly advice

I am scheduled to start an overseas contract working a 28/28 rotation on a residents visa in Qatar for the next few years. My 28 days leave every 2mths will be spent mostly at home in the UK.

After spending endless hours researching the most tax efficent way to manage my situation I am totally confused, there is so many different companies offering all kinds of options and to be honest I do not know who to believe or trust.

If anyone has any experiance or advice on the most tax efficent way to reduce my tax liability I would really look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards
Ian

  • Hello there

What is it specifically that you are looking for advice on?

I don't believe that there is any income tax payable on your income in Qatar.

From the information you have provided you will remain tax resident in the UK and therefore you will pay income tax on your worldwide income over here.

    Hope this helps.
  • Hi,

Thanks for your reply, i am totally new to contract work having always been PAYE.

From what I have been told there are many options-

    Sole trader
    Ltd company
    Offshore company
and even some tax avoidence schemes

Its all a bit of a mindfield to me and was hoping to find some one was some expertise in the most tax efficent wat to proceed.

The income is all txable; arrange it as you like subject to employment law and other contractural arrangements that you like of course.

    Hello Ian

It's a fairly wide-reaching question then! I had assumed initially that you were an employee seconded overseas.

In order to determine what would be the best route, can you provide an idea of what it is that you do, and how much money you will receive per year. PM me if you don't want to post financial detail on the open forum.

    Best wishes
  • Hi. Many thanks I have sent you a PM.......
  • You need advice, professional advice.

However, presuming that you wish to see as much of your gross income as possible, the starting point should be that it never arrives in the UK in the first place. How far you then wish to push the envelope is up to you but the UK government will happily screw you for tax on the lot whereas I would be looking at the exact opposite and not wanting to pay taxes on any of it.

You may wish to read up on the mind numbingly options regarding residency and domicile. Read carefully as all is not what it first appears but the answers you seek are in there to be found.
  • You are absolutely correct I do need professional advice. I would like to find the right accountant who specialises in dealing with my requirements, but as I mentioned I am unclear to what I actually require as it is very difficult to get a definitive answer from anyone I have spoke to...........

Maybe you could send me a PM explaining in more detail your suggestions

    Many thanks
