Your kids are only little for a short time. Make the most of being in such a great position able to spend so much time at home with them. I would start some kind of study now which will help you in a couple of yrs when maybe the job goes and your kids are older, In the mean time the study will keep your mind busy and you ownt get so fed up at work.
Debt free and plan on staying that way!!!!

True, but the new job would offer me the same study and more, so even thought Im given up some time with the kids (say 30mins in the morning and and 1 1/2 late afternoon) I would be a lot better off career wise.

AAAHHHH I dont know what do to, as I say I have now declined the offer but could phone up tomorrow and ask if they are still willing to have me I will take it.

You have done the right thing.
If the job they have offered you is at the top of the pay scale then where do you go?
    You cannot buy time.
    Money is not everything.
Look at other opportunities for career development as they come up and dont be afraid to say - no.
We all evolve - get on with it
