Should I try and send a follow up email?

I'm currently not working due to ill health, but recently found a job that I'd love to do, and that the hours suited. I applied, and got a 'thanks but no thanks' email.

Tonight I got a random phone call from the interviewer, who asked me a few questions - I was in a car park and very flustered, and don't think I sold myself :o

He said I'd hear within the next few days, but did say he had hundreds of applicants to get through...

There is no email on the website, but I do know the end prefix of emails, so should I try and send a follow up email to improve my chances?

I'm gutted that I've messed this up for myself :(

Absolutely. Drop them an email saying you were surprised to hear from them, but really pleased as you'd love the job and think you're a good match with your skills and experience. Say that you hadn't prepared for the discussion as you were in a car park at the time, so weren't in the best place to answer questions. So if they'd like to follow up anything with you, you'd be very happy to talk again. End by stating again that you are grateful for the opportunity to be interviewed and are really interested in the job, committed to performing well etc.
