Solar thermal & Heat pumps

Options
After sales man visit today, came through cold call
Advised government would pay from October 2012
18p KWH solar thermal for 20 years
6p KWH Air source heat pump for 20 years

With a 16 to 20 tube solar thermal system and 250litre tank costing £6,000

Meter would be fitted and I would earn about £400 a year by submitting readings to gas company

With a 4kw to 6kw air source hear pump (Daikin) would cost £17,000 or £12,500 if sign up now. Seems expensive?

Meter would be fitted and I would earn £1,200 to £1,800 a year by submitting reading to gas company
With the FITs, RHI, RHHP/Grant and proposed Green deal, I am confused. I thought the RHI is not even confirmed yet for domestic and its too early to rush into heat pumps

Don't believe him, obviously a 'salesman' the government hasn't even released the RHI payment details yet, by the way, solar thermal IMO, a complete waste of money unless you are a residential carehome or school, and a Daikin 4 - 6 kW heat pump only costs £3k to £4 to buy, report him to the police.......

Seriously report him to both Police and Trading Standards.

£17,000 reduced to £12,500 if you sign up now? - WOW

Do you get a further reduction if they can put up a sign in your garden? and even more off if they can use your property as a show house?

And we thought the days of the Double Glazing salesman were finished!

I note that I installed a solar-thermal panel, with bits from ebay, for under 500.
Payback is considerably under 10 years.
  • The tariffs are not confirmed yet for the domestic scheme, and given government's recent changes with the PV tariffs, I don't see how we can be sure that it will happen anyway....

As a rule, anyone who charges for a 'meter' for heat systems doesn't know what they are talking about. The government has already confirmed that any tariffs for the heat scheme would be based on the heat output calculated by computer software (the same as calculates the EPC ratings for houses) - otherwise people with heat pumps could run their central heating all through summer with their windows open, and get paid for it!! Or empty their hot water cylinders on sunny days to get it refilled again by solar panels!! :T

Going by what happened with the feed-in tariffs, as a minimum the product and installer will both need to be MCS certified. Don't take anyone's word for it, check the MCS website directly for both product and installer.

    Hi

... all of the above, and also half the cost of the solar thermal system and you'll be somewhere in the right ballpark ... you'll then find that a 16/20 tube evacuated tube system would be far too small for a 250l tank, so they're offering a system which won't work for twice the price of one which would .... :wall:

  • Hi JohnandDabby
I did ask the salesman, how would I get paid for all the energy I could generate when I don’t want generate for my own needs, eg in the summer excessive hot water which I cannot pass it on to someone else. He said the energy would be stored in the tank as the hot water, but not used, what a waste if possible.

At least you were suspicious enough to ask the right questions... I would like to hope that the whole renewables industry doesn't turn into a new double glazing scam, but I'm losing confidence daily...
