Retail sales - HOW much discount before Christmas??

I have been receiving increasingly desperate emails from companies offering more and more discounts on their goods before Christmas.
These generally started off offering free 'gifts' and/or free postage & packing (at the beginning of November), and then have been progressing each week since with a bigger discount - 10%, 15%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% ... and today, from one online store, a staggering 70% !!
If this trend continues I confidently predict that by the time the January Sales arrive these companies will be either giving their product away gratis or delivering them to my door with a £10 sweetener to "take them off our hands....."
Some of these discounts are for real, not the usual "one day in the store at a silly price and then discounted" kind of scenario.
Hmmm. Makes me think the retail sector is really struggling this December. What's it like on the High Street near you?

Exactly the same. Did a big christmas shop last week, and popped out to get a couple of other bits this week and everything seems cheaper.
Myself and the wife have not spent a lot on each other this year, better off spending the money in the Sales.0 -
Were already IN the sales !!! there will be no extra discounts after Christmas this year.0

Avon lady comes to my door.
"Fifty quid, and you can have the lot" she says, pointing to the boot full of cosmetics.
"Oh go on then." I reply. "I could do with the cash; going out for a curry later"

Trouble is, how will they clear the surplus if the stock isn't bought before Christmas?0 -
Burtons must be getting it bad. They seem to have had a sale on for the past 3 or 4 weeks.0

All I know is I have bought things I was thinking about looking for in the sales. In the sales you can quite often not find your size though. So I bought hubby a suit at 25% off and was able to get 2 pairs of trousers instead of one.
I am not really buying things i wouldn't have, but maybe bumping them up sooner. And then wrapping them as presents lol. 2 birds one stone.0
