Bird flue hits UK

Britain's deputy chief veterinary officer, Fred Landeg, said all 159,000 turkeys on the affected farm in eastern England would be slaughtered. He said the virus was found in only one of 22 turkey sheds on the farm, owned by Bernard Matthews PLC, Europe's largest turkey producer.

Luckily this is happening now, hopefully it'll be cleared up well in time for me to get a £9 4 kilo Bernard Matthews turkey again next Christmas!

Hopefully the balanced flue variety? As they're turkeys I suppose we should be grateful it's not 'bird flew'.

But I suspect it's actually bird flu?;)

That should be just in time for the next foot and mouth epidemic.

You may all make the jokes /? funny quips etc but think about the people who make their living from farming the turkeys/ sheep/beef etc.

Its NOT funny at all. My mother had to have all her animals killed during the last foot & mouth epidemic. It certainly was not funny seeing this happen & having dead animals around for days on end waiting for them to be disposed of. Luckily on our farm we never got it.

Also there are dire money problems as people turn away from buying turkeys/chickens/beef/sheep etc when something like this happens.

PS not attacking you steady-eddie just trying to point out how difficult it is if its your animals this happens to.
  • I appreciate the gravity of the situation but I was merely trying to bring a little relief using a couple of quotes. I also have witnessed the scenes which you mention but not from the immediate financial perspective and appreciate what you say.
