Immigrants wouldnt be given this status automatically, but I have witnessed accepted asylum seekers once thier appeal/hearing has been granted giving them 'leave to remain'. 3 years in the a/s housing provision market maens I have a little understanding of proceedure and benefits.

Illegal immigrants / asylum seekers are barred from working in this country until their claim is sorted, even though in London we have over 1000 doctors that could be utilised.

Most immigrant visas specify that the holder is barred from 'funds from the public purse' - ie benefits.

i used to deal with asylum seekers who were awaiting their appeal hearing as to whether they were entitled to stay in the UK. They were given vouchers for food, and occasional clothing allowances and had full access to NHS facilities and schools, and had housing provided for them. But not entitled to work or claim benefits

Once their appeal verdict was reached - depended on what happened next

Negative = return to their country of origin as and when safe passage is available - then that became a Home Office issue to repatriotise the occupants, and they were entitled to no further benefits. If the Home office dont collect them, or they abscond in any way they then become Illegal Immigrants - not asylum seekers.

Positive = Granted the right to remain in the UK - then all the benefits systems kicked in, and in certain hardship cases to ensure there was a chance of future employment a payment through jobseekers was sometimes granted.

Adjourned = usually relating to a child or another family member whereby a date is set in the future to re-appraise their case to stay in the UK - and then the Asylum Seeker status would continue with housing provided.

I used to work for one of the housing providers.

The LEGAL MIGRANTS are not Asylum seekers - migrants here are here legitimately and usually for work reasons. I hate the damage the Daily Mail has caused by lumping all 3 terms together! Legal Immigrants, Illegal Immigrants and Asylum Seekers are 3 seperate entities.
