Will be overpaid on salary...

FTC ends on Friday, just checked the HR system and someone has made a mistake and salary will be as normal - as in the whole month's worth.

Bad enough that they are ending the contract early but now to mess up the final salary....

I've emailed HR and said that although it's very nice, it's wrong and can they correct it before it goes in (it's another week before it actually gets credited).

My question is - what happens if they can't/don't correct it beforehand?

Will they just debit the overpayment back? How can I make sure they don't take more than they should?

Also means that I will have overpaid on tax too.

Anyone been in this situation/know what happens?

    What do you think happens?

They reclaim the money. Either by debiting your account if that is technically possible (and assuming you have given them permission to do so), or by them sending you an invoice and you paying it back.
  • Thanks for your advice, albeit a bit blunt.

HR didn't seem to know - no surprises there. I obviously know it would need to be paid back, just wasn't sure what the process would normally be as usually companies get it right in the first place.

Be much easier if they can correct it before next week but we'll see

Is it a mistake, could they be paying you until the end of the month as a gesture of good will or are you owed holiday or notice pay

If you do receive the money in error i think the company would write to you aking for any overpayment back

If they are not able to correct it in time before the payment goes into your account at least ask them to confim the correct amount that should have gone in.
That way you'll know how much they're going to want back and be confident about the amount you can safely spend.

Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end

    No they made a mistake!

HR passed it back to my LM who phoned payroll (who are based in mauritius - great when things work well) basically she didn't send them the information before the payroll cut off date - she hasn't actually told me yet what they said as she then dashed off to meetings but from what I heard, they are going to reclaim the wrong amount (I hope after they have credited it to my account and not that they will cancel that and then still take it or I will let rip) and then do an adhoc payment for the 2 weeks - great but it seems from the conversation that they can't tell me when that will be.

Great communication in the company - an email would be a big help to me explaining if she is in meetings constantly.
  • for the tax if you are overpaid they will either give it you back in your new job or if not and it continues until April you will get a rebate for the unused tax allowance from now until April 8th
