Old Style Bread Oven

I have just bought a 16th century weavers cottage :j
One of the features is a genuine bread oven .
Does anybody have one of these? I have no idea about them. In fact have never made HM bread .
I am wondering if it going to be one of those quaint features that will be more trouble than it is worth!

Wow ! lucky you.
I've no experience of these except seeing them used on history programmes on the telly. My feeling is that you're right, it will be a lot more trouble than it's worth
Presumably there is no temperature gauge on it, so getting it to the right temp (very hot) will be a problem. The one I saw on telly (Tales From a Green Valley) had kindling put inside the oven to heat it up, and had to be sealed with a flour and water paste after the bread was put in. The bread came out very sooty looking too. Mind you they were recreating the 1620s, is your oven that old, or is it maybe Victorian ?
A modern oven really is much better:D but still, a lovely feature. Can it be used for storage.0 -
I've only seen one used in Tales from the Green Valley too but I do envy you your cottage!Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

Well its a cast iron oven set on the side of the fire place. Below the oven is a little iron box ? OH tells me this is where you light the fire.
It is a listed building & has just been renovated so it could be a renovated original.
Some one has suggested to me that I try a small pizza base first. Genuine stone baked pizza anyone?
