Trying to find a good builder for internal house renovations

We had a builder lined up, on recommendation from a family member, to carry out some internal work in our house.
After providing a quote, all of a sudden he seems to be avoiding us. His website is down and I'm beginning to wonder if the company may be in difficulties.
We had booked time off work and it now looks like we'll end sitting up in the house looking at the scene of devastation instead of getting work done. The whole situation has got me completely stressed out and I'm desperate to get it sorted.
We need to find another builder that we can be assured will do a good job at a fair price and won't leave us hanging around or having to chase him to get stuff done.
Can anyone advise me how to go about finding another reputable builder? I don't know anyone who's had work done recently to get another recommendation from and would really like to see work that has been completed before committing myself.
The work involves reinforcing the supports for a metal beam between two rooms, plastering, fitting doors, skirting and architrave and replacing a few radiators.
Thanks.
