Individual Pay Rise

I work within a small business of 15 employees. I've been in the same management position for 5 years without a pay rise. But, within that time, my responsibilities have increased and at one stage, my boss was going through a personal crises and asked me to run the company should he need to go away for a few months. This didn't happen but I'm fully aware that I am capable of running the company should he need me to.

I'm very good at my job, I take a lot of the stress off my boss and we have a very good relationship.

I have finally asked for a pay rise (the company is doing well) and although my boss said that I deserve one he won't oblige because he believes that legally he has to increase pay for anyone else who has the title of manager even though our jobs are all very different and nobody else's role has changed.

I believe that he's incorrect but I can't find anything concrete to present to him. I'd appreciate anyone that can offer any clarity on the issue.

He is incorrect. There is no right to employees to be paid the same as others as long as the difference isn't based on discriminatory reasons (sex, religion etc). SarEl will no doubt be able to point you in the right direction with legislation.

I would agree - he is incorrect (although I am not sure what legislation Hammyman is expecting me to quote! There's no legislation on pay rises!). But it sounds like a bit of an excuse to me.
  • Thanks guys. Yes, it is partly an excuse. There is one person that constantly complains about money who's paid the same but has a 'lesser' job role. My employer's fear is that she will kick up a stink and get legal on his !!!!

Why would your colleague learn about your pay rise if one was granted?! This is a negotiation between your boss and you. It's nothing to do with your colleague.

Yep, I know. I also run the payroll so I really would be the only one who knew! My boss doesn't always operate in a logical and sane manner ;)
