Here is a list of telephone number types showing the two we use which are 0800...free
0843 ...basic (local rate) number

That site is wrong. 0843 is a "lo call" revenue sharing telephone number, charged above the standard BT rates land line rates, that means it is a premium number.
However, it isn't in the "Premium Rate Service" group, so it that sense not "Premium".0 -
... is a 0800 number. This of course, is free to callers.
That said, Ofcom propose that calls to 080 numbers (i.e. 0800 and 0808) become free calls from mobile phones in late 2014.Nifty one, are you under the false impression that a 0843 number is a premium one?
From late 2014, the revenue share "premium" (thereafter to be known as the "Service Charge") which is built into the cost of calling all 084, 087 and 09 numbers will have to be explicitly declared every time the number is advertised.ashleypride wrote: »0843 is a "lo call" revenue sharing telephone number.ashleypride wrote: »charged above the standard BT rates land line rates, that means it is a premium number. 084, 087 and 09 numbers are all "premium rate" numbers. Some 087 (those with a Service Charge above 10p/min) and all 09 numbers are also covered by specific PRS regulation.
Non-geographic numbers are complicated. I have tried to explain the details and some of the background over here: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/4557431Businesses using 084, 087 or 09 numbers will soon need to display details of the inbuilt Service Charge under Ofcom's "unbundled tariffs" plans.
Businesses using 084, 087 or 09 numbers for customer service, complaints, renewals, etc, will need to swap to an 01, 02, 03 or 080 number before the Consumer Rights Directive comes into effect June 2014.0 -
It is only free from a landline. From a mobile you're currently looking at 10p to 30p/min.

Under any reasonable definition, such as one found in a dictionary, 084 and 087 numbers are "premium rate". They use the exact same revenue share system as 09 numbers albeit at a lower rate: 084 - up to 5p/min; 087 - up to 10p/min; compared to 10p/min to several pounds per minute for 09 numbers.
From late 2014, the revenue share "premium" (thereafter to be known as the "Service Charge") which is built into the cost of calling all 084, 087 and 09 numbers will have to be explicitly declared every time the number is advertised.
The term "lo-call" only ever applied to 0845 numbers, and then only until 2005. It has never applied to 0843 or 0844 numbers. Usage of that term in any way whatsoever will land you in trouble with the ASA. Their site lists a number of such rulings.
Yes. The caller is charged a "premium", the revenue share fee that is built into the call price. Businesses have spent two decades denying this fee exists. From 2014 the "service charge" as it will become known will have to be declared every time the number is advertised.
