Offer acceptance and handing in notice qustion :)

Hi All,

After hours of gruelling interviews and assessments i've landed a new job :)

I've verbally accepted the position and have been told that they will post me written confirmation.

They have also said that they will scan the posted documents and email me PDF copies of them.

Now my question is, Would you be prepared to hand in your notice based on the PDF copy of the docs?

Thanks all

if the offer is subject to references, medical, or anything else, no. I never hand in my notice until it is unconditional.

Personally I wouldn't hand my notice in until it was 100% definate i.e can't be withdrawn.

then I would hand notice in
  • and you would consider recieving wirtten comfirmation of the offer to be 100% definate.

My question is whether receiving the confirmation via email PDF of the posted documents is enough to consider it to be 100% or should i wait for the physical paper work to arrive?

    My view is yes.

The problem is, as you probably know, unless you have agreed special terms the offer can still be withdrawn or your employment terminated very easily. So the only real protection this gives you is payment for whatever notice period has been agreed for your new job should they change their minds.

Yeah i'm aware that it can get withdrawn anyway, as i'm aware i can get jogged on within the first year with very little room for recorse other than claiming my notice from them.

Is the paperwork due (in the post) ASAP? Would there be severe detriment to wait until they did arrive? i.e. Would start dates be affected?
  • no, it wouldn't really make much difference.. just quite keen to get the ball rolling

Its pretty common practice for emailed contracts to seal a deal and for candidates to hand in notice after receiving emailed contracts (signed PDFs). I don't see what benefit waiting for a hard copy would give, if you have a signed unconditional offer of employment in pdf form, I'd say that's as definite an offer as a hard copy. Of course as the other poster above said, they can always withdraw the offer before you start but they would need to pay you notice pay as per the contractual agreement in this case.
