Tax code?

I started employment on 6/10/11 after 6 years of looking after my children.
From what I'm earning I was told I wouldn't pay any tax.
My first wage slip was given to me on around 18th October showing the tax code '0t'. I had 50% of my wages taken for tax.
I was advised by the tax office that this was because I hadn't filled out a p60, but he took the details there and then.
2 weeks later I received my tax code through the post and thought it would be sorted out. However the next pay day was the same.
How long does it take to sort out, and when will I get the money back that's been taken for tax?

  • Ask your employer if they've received their copy from HMRC. When you get your new tax code a copy of it is sent to both you and your employers payroll.
If they haven't received theirs or hadn't received it in time for the next payrun, you'd be paid at the old code.

If they haven't received it, just phone HMRC and ask them to send / fax another copy to them.

Nothing to do with a P60 (you won't have one of those if you haven't been in employment).

Your new employers should have asked you to fill in a P46 when you first started work. They should submit that & get a tax code back for you. If they didn't, they are not on the ball, and so it's quite likely that - even if they have received a code for you - they haven't operated it yet.

Take in the letter you have received, and ask your employer if they have received a similar notification. If they say no, then ask them to ring and chase it, then ask - every day - if they have it, until they say yes.

All being well, they will apply the code, and you will get some tax refunded next payday.
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

The form the tax office refered to is a P46, link to it below

Your employer should offer this form if you do not have a P45 but unfortuneately many do not.

From what you have said you would be able to sign option A and your employer could have put you onto code 747L cumulative without waiting to hear from the tax office. It might be worth asking your employer if they will accept a P46 now to sort out your tax otherwise if not sorted soon I would check with tax office it is possible that your employer did an online P46 and the tax office think that you are on 747L cumulative so may not send a tax advice to the employer.
