Freelance work

Options
I don't know if this has been posted before. If it has please can someone share the link with me.

A few things have happened over the past few months and my wages just aren't stretching far enough.

I'm good at typing and could fit in some online freelance typing work around the hours I do in my job.

I just don't know where to find the jobs. Can anyone help?

  • I looked at Take Note Typing a while ago but never used them, so can't vouch.

Here's the freelance sites I use, I don't make a fortune but it helps with the bills.

    Freelancer

    peopleperhour

    elance

    guru

    Good luck! :D
  • Hi emlou, thanks for sharing the sites with us all. Just a quick Q, I looked at elance and freelancer, and they seem to be american sites? Do they still pay in pounds? Or do you have to wait for a cheque or whatever to be sent from America. Cheers.

Both sites can be set to UK £ and you can choose to be paid by Paypal.
  • I've been freelancing for the past 2 years now and I love it. Unlike most people who do it to supplement their income, I do it full-time and earn far more than I imagined I would when first setting up. I have no formal training unlike a lot of web developers who freelance but what I do really well is market myself.

What I can say is you need more skills than just basic office admin. The competition in that sector is fierce and underpaid to the extent you would be making a loss after factoring in electric.
  • If any of you sexy boys n' gals have wanted to be a part of a surveying project, here's your oppontunity https://www.pineconeresearch.co.uk/Signup/Signup_Form.aspx :)
  • i havent really heard much about freelancing online, could someone please ive me a few lines on what it is and what it involves, cheers.

I do a little freelancing and I have had some work through Peopleperhour.

My 'line' is mainly website maintenance and data entry. I actually found my biggest client from PPH and I know do very regular work for them privately

There are often writing jobs posted on there.

It is hard to find the work and get your bids accepted, but if you are serious, then stick to it and keep trying.
I would suggest getting a small website together and showcasing any work you have done/are doing

Have a look at Freelancer and Elance. There's a ton of work going there although it can be quite difficult competing with people willing to do the work for peanuts.

Yes but only initially. If the OP is going to make a go of this then within a year they could have the credibility they need to charge whatever the want.

BTW oDesk is a fantastic platform and definitely the one I'd go with over elance etc.
  • I do freelance magazine work on the side (and have done for numerous years now) and if you can write well, then coming up with original ideas for articles/features etc will really help. Budgets these days aren't massive, but get a decent portfolio and - more importantly - a good reputation for reliability and you can expect to see a steady stream of work come in reasonably quickly. :)

    Best of luck.
