Red Cabbage Recipe

Hello,

Has anyone got any good tried and tested red cabbage recipes that I can use this Christmas please?

Thanks

  • Hi,

I just had some red cabbage yesterday- only because it was on offer and I hadnt had it in some time!

I cooked the cabbage then emptied into a wok and added half a jar of cranberrry sauce.

It may not be special enough to go with christmas dinner but with my Gammon joint it was delish :T
  • I use this recipe

    1 red cabbage, shredded
    2 onions, chopped finely
2 apples, peeled, cored and cut into cubes
    1/4 tsp cinnamon
    Pinch nutmeg
    Dots of butter
    1 tbsp water
    1 tbsp sugar

Mix all above together and cook 150ºc for 2-2.5 hours, stirring 2 - 3 times during cooking.

This is great served hot or cold. We usually have it hot with christmas lunch and then cold on Boxing Day with cold meats and salad.

    It also freezes well.

  • Thanks Tracey, so you put it in the oven to cook? I might make it in advance one night this week.
  • i usually cook it very simply (just with butter and seasoning) but push the boat out for xmas with this recipe.

    small red onion sliced
    15g butter
    500g red cabbage
    1 tbsp soft brown sugar
    1 tbsp red wine vinegar
quarter teaspoon each of ground nutmeg, ground allspice, ground cloves
    2 eating apples sliced
    50g sultanas

cook onion in the butter until translucent
add cabbage, sugar, vinegar, nutmeg, allspice asnd cloves
    stir and cover.
siimer for 40 mins. add extra water if it dries up a bit
add apples and sultanas and cook for 15 more mins

can be cooked the day before and reheated in a saucepan or microwave too
  • Do you think this receipe would work in the slow cooker??

Yep just mix everything together, dot with butter and put into the oven. I usually cover with foil so it doesn't get dry and stir a few times throughout cooking. It is yummy when first made but does taste better the day after.

I haven't tried this recipe in a slow cooker but think it would work well and it would stay moist with the apples.

I am sure it would taste good if you just leave the apples out. Maybe if you add some redcurrant jelly or just add a bit more sugar for a bit more sweetness.
