Debt collectors generally don't have documentary proof of the debts that are asked to chase.

Which is why they are trying to avoid providing any if they can get away with it.

Even if any proof exists, it's likely they would have to incur hassle going back to the original creditor to get it. That is more hassle than it's worth for many collectors, so they will skirt around the issue and try to avoid it hoping that you just give in.

Just send the same letter stating that you require actual proof.

State that failure to provide documentary evidence of the debt sufficient to rely on in court WILL result in them being reported to the OFT and Trading Standards.

As per your advice i sent Rossendales the same letter ,PLUS about the documentary evidence, they replied after about two weeks with something along the lines of contacting their client and getting back to me in due course. Today i received a fresh demand from them,"Your debt has been passed to us by the above client (Arrow Global Guernsey Limited - Telecommunications). We are instructed that you have ignored previous requests for payment and we intend to recover your outstanding debt immediately."

Obviously the left hand isn't talking to the right hand in this case. I've already sent them two letters.

i emailed them and got this automated reply :

I am currently out of the office, I will be returning on Tuesday 17th April 2012

I will have limited access to my emails during this period

Should your query be urgent please contact either Andrew Twine at Atwine@rossendales.com or Charlie townsend at ctownsend@rossendales.com

So i've gone ahead and emailed ALL three of them. Maybe they'll get it this time
  • I had a letter from these clowns recently threatening me, a tad ungrammatically, that "... you should be in no doubt that payment of that which you owe will be pursued and the company will utilise its expertise in the management of data".

    :p
  • Stujim what was the outcome of this?
Partner has had a similar letter stating he owes £500! And we're not sure where it would have come from. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
  • well this is weird.. My girlfriend just got the same letter (interesting timing!!!)

she has absolutely no idea why. The previous address on the letter is from 7 years ago and she hasn't been contacted since!!

its a fishing letter asking for clarification on whether my girlfriend lives at the property. She has no idea how they got her address or what its about as she doesn't believe to have outstanding debts!

for now, will ignore the letter. If they pester again, I might send them my tenant agreement to show she isn't registered at the property (which is true) and hopefully they will go away?

I've just got one, this has come from Anglian water. The debt is my ex husbands and they have transferred it to me, but I don't use my married name. They have added my own bill, which I am willing to pay. It's not even in my personal name. Also I have a disabled son so can I have this transferred back to Anglian water to deal with
