Powdered Milk

Any ideas where I can get this relatively cheap? Asda and Tesco seem to be expensive but maybe I expect too much :( I'm looking for 1 - 1.5Kg of it. I'm making a HUGE batch of home made instant hot chocolate (Snowman soup :p) for the kids to give to teachers and their friends at school. But most places seem to be £10 ish for that quantity I think £6 for 1Kg is the best I found so far... and Macro was useless, no Cost-Co card as it doesn't prove very money saving when I keep buying extras! :rotfl:

Do you have any Asian grocers near you? Milk powder is the basis of many Indian sweets, so whilst it may not be knock-down cheap, you're bound to find it there in big bags and the price will reflect that.

Sorry to be no help, but the snowman soup intrigues me. Are you layering the powdered milk, cocoa and sugar in a jar? Is there a recipe somewhere? Sounds interesting :D
  • No I'm mixing it all together, otherwise it would need to be mixed before its used anyway as there's more than one serving. I have bought a Huge 1Kg bag of mini marshmallows and some Cone shaped cellophane bags , the end result should look like this

And I order little cards with the snowman soup poem from VistPrint so I can hole punch them and attach with a ribbon

  • You could cheat and just buy a Big jar of drinking chocolate and portion it, but the kids really like the idea of making their own and we are adding cinnamon to it so its a little bit christmassy!

Oohhh sounds nice; I might make something similar next year and add some chocolate stirrers (plastic spoons with sprinkles/mashmallows on top; even better if you can find some christmassy ones)

Couldn't find a better example but there are nicer ones!

  • Oh wow they look awesome! I bought some jazzy cocktail stirrers, but I will definitely make those chocolate covered ones next year! :D

Try Sainsbury's for your powdered milk. Cheaper than any I have found. £1.61 for 400g/ £4.2 kg. Mind you, I'm sure a few months ago it was about £1.40.

Oh thank you! I will try there if I have no luck at the Chinese and Indian stores :)

  • I normally use T£sco Value Skimmed Milk Powder (we get through quite a bit in yoghurt, drinks and baking etc ) - just checked MySupermarket and this is 40.3p per 100g - 3 x 454g boxes at £1.83 should sort you out - £5.49 in total.

Thanks for bringing it up - been getting it at Aldi but think this works out cheaper for a change!!!
