when checking air pressures yesterday noticed the back passenger tyre was reading just 17psi!. So filled it up to 32psi.
Decided to get it checked at kwik fit this morning and a nail was the culprit:(

Anyway thing is i doing 80miles a day and never noticed any imbalance with the steering of the car, is this usual or what should i have noticed with a tyre running at half pressure?

  • If it had been a front tyre you would have noticed it , that is providing you survived the trip into the ditch.

  • Taking corners you might have felt the back of the car trying to overtake the front, however 17psi isn't too bad and it would have taken fair cornering to notice, it would have to get down to about 10psi before it would have started to wallow on gentle bends.

I would think your car is FWD, with RWD it would have been more obvious, the tyres obviously do more and the rear end weighs more in proportion to a FWD.

Yes car is FWD. Just suprised such a difference to a rear tyre pressure does not impact driving to a noticeable level. Anyway just back from kwick fit and £20 down from a puncture repair (but i guess peace of mind its fixed and not any reason ).

£10 at my local garage, I had one done two weeks ago, screw in rear nearside tyre the pressure was down to 20psi and I certainly noticed the handling was affected when on sharper bends at 30mph.

£10 for a puncture repair at my local. Kwik Fit quoted over £20 last time I asked. Halfords Autocentre are about £12 if I remember correctly.

It's a good idea to glance at the tyres before setting off (as well as regular checks with a pressure gauge), especially if you're doing more than just city centre driving.

You do not want a rear tyre to give up on a motorway:
