  • NHS nurse here. The drug calculations tests are pretty simple for most people, just make sure and pay attention to whether the measurements are in mg/mcg that kind of thing. They usually give out (in my trust anyway) formula sheets with drip rates for IVs/blood sets. In fact I seem to remember having a formula sheet for pretty much everything.

yes use common sense. you should know the rough dosage. if your calculation is way off then you have messed up.try doing a bit of work on % and fractions. and don't stess out.

And kill older people due to lack of knowledge of 'rough dosage' and 'common sense'. Nice to know that it is only 'rough dosage' and 'common sense' are the only essentials to give for older people medications/ care. Well, I suppose it better than 'no' rough dosage or common sense to give elderly patients medication and leave elderly people in pain for the last days of their life.

If you know the "rough dosage" for a drug then its obvious if your calculation is, eg, a factor of 10 out becasue you've got the decimal point in the wrong place. Thus knowledge of rough (ie approximate) dosage & common sense help prevent drug errors & improve patient safety

I didn't read pauletruth's reply in any other way - some people just sit and wait so they can nitpick!
