I love receiving hampers for Christmas and Birthdays.

For "Man" hampers maybe you could put in miniature bottles of spirits with bottles of mixers too. Car "stuff" like windscreen wash, litre of oil (if you know what oil they use), hip flask, thermal flask, thermal gloves/socks, chamois leather cloth thingy.

Or maybe if they're into gardening how about, gardening gloves, packets of seeds, Baby Bio plant food, stuff like that maybe all piled into some kind of planter?

    I love hampers.

  • If you want to save on buying hampers cover some shoe boxes with really christmassy paper and decoupage stuff on top of it .Kids love decoupage its really only cutting out and layering up with card and glue and if its for their granny so much the better. One of mine made one once for her gran with pictures of us all stuck all over it so it was covered in Photos and my Ma-in-law used it afterwards to keep her favorite photos in.Every year I buy some pretty notelets in a box and stick a dozen stamps in for my sis-in-law who lives in Bromley and hasn't got a computer but loves to write note and letters. She is not very well off and has to be careful how often she uses the phone as well, but these notes means she can keep in touch with people.
  • I'm going shopping this afternoon for the rest of the bits and bobs I need. I never thought of dog food as she has a dog and I'll pick up some treats too. Notelets - great idea as well as stamps and I'll also get a mobile phone top up for her. Miniature bottles of whisky and brandy going in as well :D:D

You've had some great ideas here. I like the idea of buying everyday items in a more expensive brand, so they feel like luxuries - of course someone like my grandmother would have saved them for 'best' until they went off, so it may not work for everyone!
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!

I've gone a slightly different route with my hamper for my mum and dad but just wanted to say thanks for the original idea/suggestions.

M&D are in their late seventies. They LOVE fruit and each of them eat 2 or 3 pieces each day - so they are now getting a ginormous fruit hamper. They will love it and it will be used and certainly not wasted :T

    Thanks again for the idea

Lizzie - if anyone asks me what I want - I am usually stymied! I never thought of asking for a fruit hamper! I love the exotic fruits like papaya, Physalis, Medjoul dates - stuff that Aldi just dont do! Thanks a bunch (sorry, couldnt resist it!).

I've had another thought about ideas for older people living on their own. A hamper of treats for a pet they own, or things like wild bird food, feeders and such like might save them money and also be fun.
  • I've put treats for the beloved doggie, as well as a new winter coat (for the dog not MIL), 2 new bowls and a fleecy dog blanket too. :)

I've been reading this thread with real enjoyment. You are a sweetheart Northern Princess; I am sure your MIL will be absolutely thrilled. I know I would be.
