right tax code but paid too much tax

my husband changed employers last month and was given a p45 to give to new employer which he did but on this months pay slip is his tax code of 747L but has paid £125 too much tax. i dont understand how this has happened. i have had a look at his p45 and it has on it his earnings to date and that it is month 7 and total tax to date. his payslip also has his total gross pay to date which is correct. can i expect to get if back from his employers or will i have to reclaim it from hmrc?

The only way to tell what has caused this is to give full figures. Gross and tax, plus tax code and basis, and month number and date from P45. Gross tax month/week number and date paid from payslip.

The gross from the P45 plus the gross from the payslip do not add up to the gross to date on the payslip. Have there been any other payments made between the P45 being issued and this payslip?
  • yea cause the new firm took over on the 10th of the month last months pay was in two halves from the old company 9 days pay which i presume will be included on the p45. then from new company from 10th to end of month pay slip

This means that both the old employer and the new employer used the tax allowance for month 7 so that when the new employer added the P45 details to pay month 8 there was no tax allowance left to use so tax had to be taken on the full amount. There will be a total of thirteen payments made this year so one has to be without a tax allowance. I am afraid the tax is correct there is no tax to claim back.
  • thank you for explaining it to me i understand now
