Ref the downlighters: get a piece of plastic pipe and cut six inch lengths to fit over each downlighter in the loft. about 4 inch bore is usually enough but give them room to breath, that's the key. Cheap as chips if you do it that way.
  • I'm presuming you own the house and have an income and that's why you're entitled to nothing?
Your right there, I've to pay for the everything.
I assume that is a normal pitched roof. You could probably do this yourself.
Work out the quantities you need and phone round the builders suppliers. Tennants Ravenhill Road, Lowdens, Corry's etc and see who is cheapest. You will get the area covered per roll by Goggling it. You will not get many rolls in a car may take a few trips opr get them delivered.
I never really thought of those, I will try them out and see compared to B&Q. Thanks for the installation info. It's a 120sqm according to the Land Registry website. It's a detached bungalow, so I've got alot of celing. The house is square and the roof peaks in the middle, like a pointy hat ! It's like a spiders web up there with the roof trusses you really do have to climb about it. Be awkard enough buy I'll give it a go myself allright.

I've been looking into the downlights and have seen the pipe mentioned before. They are mostly 12v mr16 types, I've been changing them out for 4w led versions which give virtually no heat, but again they're not cheap ! Have to get the invertors out of the way also. The kitchen has R80's which I've swopped for CFL spots. So hopefully soon enough they'll be all done. If I find a big bag of cash they will !

Thanks the the replies everyone :D

I'm in the same boat as you mate but I'm 18 months ahead of you. You'll get there ok but as you recognise it takes money and, if I may say so, patience.

The grant I referred to is NOT means-tested. The link is still active here.

I called the number a week ago and the guy was in my house on Thursday.

I recommend perseverance with that freephone number. I have only just paid my 25% deposit.

B&Q do super offers every now and then. We got triple rolls of Space blanket for something daft like £9. Just keep checking in store and ask the staff for the special offers - don't pay for the full priced stuff.

True enough, got through to them this morning. Very busy but surveyor should be out in a week.
  • B&Q were doing rolls the other day from £10 when I was in. Think it was 170mm rolls and 200mm started at £12 as far as I remember.
  • I am in the simillar situation Mark.. let us know if you find anything. I will come back and check what you did... I will bookmark this page..
