Wedding Readings & Speeches

so - being home sick, and lurking through all the wedding threads (lost with what to do now i'm married lol) I came across a post about readings...
So - What did you have? and Why?
and did you make a speech?
We had the Vicar read a religious reading
Vicar – Reading: Colossians 3:12 – 17
As God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience.
Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.
Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful.
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God.
And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Found on the internet - i loved this because it describes me and new hubby to a T:
My aunt – Reading: The One
When the one whose hand you're holding
Is the one who holds your heart
When the one whose eyes you gaze into
Gives your hopes and dreams their start,
When the one you think of first and last
Is the one who holds you tight,
And the things you plan together
Make the whole world seem just right,
When the one whom you believe in
puts their faith and trust in you,
You've found the one and only love
You'll share your whole life through.
My 12 year old son wrote and read this in the church - there wasn't a dry eye in the house, and everybody finished on a big laugh!
Reading – by Matthew
Ever since I caught mum and Bob kissing in the kitchen when I was 7, i knew my life would be different, but in a good way.
We have had a lot of good times, and family fun - going to the cinema; going to theme parks; but we will always remember Bob's first holiday with us. We went to Fuerteventura, and Bob was really giddy and over-excited. He couldn't sleep and he kept us all awake with his excitement! Sometimes he is silly. Sometimes he is strict. But I know he always loves me – and that he is there for me if I need him, or I'm upset or angry about something.
Anyway - I'm really pleased that bob proposed to mum when we were on our last holiday in Lapland - and I’m glad that we're a proper family now.
And one last bit of advice for bob…..
To keep your marriage brimming
With love in the loving cup
Whenever you’re wrong, admit it
Whenever you’re right, shut up.
and this was my speech after the meal...
Nickki – Reading: "Yes, I'll marry you" by Pam Ayres
Yes, I'll marry you, my dear,
And here's the reason why;
So I can push you out of bed
When the baby starts to cry,
And if we hear a knocking
And it's creepy and it's late,
I hand you the torch you see,
And you investigate.
Yes, I'll marry you, my dear,
You may not apprehend it,
But when the tumble-drier goes
It's you that has to mend it,
You have to face the neighbour
Should our Labrador attack him,
And if a drunkard fondles me
It's you that has to whack him.
Yes, I'll marry you,
You're virile and you're lean,
My house is like a pigsty
You can help to keep it clean.
That sexy little dinner
Which you served by candlelight,
As I do chipolatas,
You can cook it every night!
It's you who has to work the drill
and put up curtain track,
And when I've got PMT
it's you who gets the flak,
I do see great advantages,
But none of them for you,
And so before you see the light,
I do, I do, I do!
Again, finished with a roar of laughter, as you all have NO idea just how true most of that poem is lol - it coud have been written for us!

We had a civil ceremony so wouldn't have been allowed anything religious anyway but my youngest son read this:
The Key to Love
The key to love is understanding.
The ability to comprehend not only the spoken word
But those unspoken gestures,
The little things that say so much by themselves.
The key to love is forgiveness.
To accept each others faults and pardon mistakes
Without forgetting, but with remembering
What you learn from them.
The key to love is sharing.
Facing your good fortune as well as the bad, together.
Both conquering problems, forever searching for ways
To intensify your happiness
The key to love is giving.
Without thought of return,
But with the hope of just a simple smile
And by giving in but never giving up.
The key to love is respect.
Realising that you are two separate people, with different ideas.
That you don't belong to each other,
You belong with each other, and share a mutual bond.
The key to love is inside us all.
It takes time and patience to unlock all the ingredients.
It is the continual learning process that demands a lot of work..
But the rewards are more than worth the effort.
And that is the key to love!
And a friend of ours who we'd asked to choose a reading actually wrote his own which was lovely and personal:
Journeys
Journeys shape our lives, from the earliest days. They will have many destinations and many purposes.
At the start we have to be guided, but all too soon we think we can fly. However, we quickly discover that many journeys will be possible only with the help of friends, or those we meet along the way.
Our earliest journeys will be on unsteady legs. This will occur again later in life, due to advancing age, or possibly a bit too much of our favourite tipple!
One of our most challenging journeys will be into parenthood. The lessons learned will be a source of great joy, cost, exasperation but, of course, rewarding.
There will be journeys we wish to forget but even these, upon reflection, may have taught us something.
Conversely, journeys to the chocolate-shop will warrant a season ticket. These journeys are exempt from calorie-counting.
There will be unimportant journeys, like those to Anfield (I'm a Liverpool fan) or Old Trafford, where despite great rivalries a common colour prevails.
There will also be journeys to great institutions, like the Royal Albert Hall. Most will be there as listeners but others will attend because of their musical talents. (Kev is a musician and has played there)
Memorable journeys can take us to warm beaches but also to high, cold places where life-defining questions were asked and answered. (Kev proposed to me at the top of the Jungfrau in Switzerland)
Some journeys are said to be ‘lovelier the second time around’. (2nd marriage for both of us)
Journeys can be requested; like ‘Daddy can we go to the zoo tomorrow?’ and here we are today to celebrate. (got married at Chester Zoo)
No matter how many we have travelled our journeys will never end. But the best ones, those to be made together, are still to come0 -
How utterly wonderful!!
I love the journeys one - I think your friend has a gift there!!

I really want this one - I hope to have it read just after we've exchanged rings and are still holding onto each other's hands (I say hope - because while I've shown it to MrD we haven't gotten round to actually organising the ceremony). (There are a lot of slightly different versions on the internet).
“Blessing of the Hands"
These are the hands of your best friend, young and strong and full of love for you, that are holding yours on your wedding day, as you promise to love each other today, tomorrow, and forever.
These are the hands that will work alongside yours, as together you build your future.
These are the hands that will passionately love you and cherish you through the years, and with the slightest touch, will comfort you like no other.
These are the hands that will hold you when fear or grief fills your mind.
These are the hands that will countless times wipe the tears from your eyes; tears of sorrow, and tears of joy.
These are the hands that will give you strength when you need it.
And lastly, these are the hands that even when wrinkled and aged, will still be reaching for yours, still giving you the same unspoken tenderness with just a touch.0 -

I love it - the first time I read it on our month thread (one of the other July brides attended a wedding where it was used) I actually welled up - that is the only time that has happened in all this wedding plan malarki.
A small part of me is tempted to adapt it from 'hands' to 'arms' but we won't be embraced at that part so I'm not sure if it'd workBut his arms are the part I love about him the most
Always feel safe and secure in them no matter what life throws at me
(pass the sick bucket lol)
