For traditional English cookery, Constance Spry.
For more adventurous stuff, Elizabeth David.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -
hi
they are both really good books. i think it depends on what sort of a cook you are.
delia is great for the basics, she also tells you what to do when things go wrong.
leiths is also good but alot more technical.
i have both and they are well used.0 -
Leiths Cookery Bible is excellent and very comprehensive.
Beetlebug1 explains the differences between the two books very well though.0 -
Can I jump in and ask something...? Wondering what people make of the new Mrs Beeton cookbook? I have no idea what to look for but wanted to get my mum a book for Christmas. She likes to cook and owns both Leith's and all of Delia's (and all of Jamie Olivers and all of...)
I was kind of looking for a book which is more technical and if possible has something to read, but more reading about cooking rather then about Countries, cultures or celebreties lives!
Be really grateful if anyone has any decent suggestions, I've no idea as I don't follow recipies myself.0 -
I don't know about the new Mrs Beeton, but I have been using one of her cook books for years. I find she is the best for the really basic things, and has a few very good bits of advice in her books. If I know anyone starting out I always buy them/recommend Mrs Beeton. What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0
