calling your bank for 'free' from your mobile

I'm sure this has been mentioned before but i did do a search but couldn't see anything...anyway here goes....

I recently needed to contact the bank about my mastercard and so i looked on the back of the card to find the number but it gives the 0845 number which i know that isn't included in my inclusive minutes but then i spotted a 'if calling from abroad' number which was a normal UK landline number so i called that! I got straight through and sorted out my query. I checked my bill later in the month and sure enough there was the landline on my bill and included in my 'free' minutes.

I now call my regular bank by this way using the landline quoted on the back of my Maestro card. Again i get through to the main customer services without any problems and it's included in my 'free' minutes. :j

I hope this helps save a few pennies (and pounds!) and stops the banks and mobile networks taking more of our hard earned money.

The banks dont get anything for you calling an 0845 number

It is a historic thing where (for example) an 01905 number would have been local rate for anyone in worcester but national rate for anyone else where as 0845 is local rate for everyone (so it was a good thing). Obviously these days the terms of engagement have changed now that people get free/ capped calls to geographic numbers

    What bank was it?
  • 0845 rate numbers are not local rate numbers. It is possible that users of these numbers get a share of the call revenue.

I think you'll find 0845 provide NO revenue whatsoever and businesses actually need to pay X a month to operate them OR X per minute.

0844 are revenue sharing like 0870 but 0845 are not.

Details of how 0845 works above - no share in revenue and the number is at a cost - agree that the benifits are less with all the non BT lines and mobiles etc around now. And in many circs the "normal" number is cheaper.
  • I think the main point is that many mobiles, & landline companies come to think of it, don't include calls to 0845 numbers in their inclusive minutes or if you have a free weekend/evening package.

Hence why it is always handy to know the 01/02 numbers.

You can get revenue share on 0845 and 0870. Why do you think all the dial up internet numbers were 0845?

Sorry revenue sharing is available on 0845 numbers. You may not get a lot per minute ,and it might only be paid out at peak rate, but if their is enough traffic it soon builds up.;)

Profit sharing is available by exception rather than the rule - there is moves to replace 0845 and 0870 with 0844 and 0871 which will have more open information about profit shares etc.

0845 were originally called lo-call numbers because they were charged at the same rate as local numbers. I dont know what provider you are with or what pricing plan but for me 0845 and local calls are still identical in cost. Personally I would prefer a company to have an 0845 number as I dont have any bundled calls and so no matter where in the country they are I pay the same amount where as non-local companies without an 0845 number I get charged more

You dont get charged more if you use any of the major suppliers,as it doesnt matter where in the country the UK 01/02 geographical number is located you still pay the same rate to call it.( Local and National rates were abolished ages ago by most major players).

Have you considered using https://www.18185.co.uk for cheaper overall calls.
