Cold Called re: CCJ Not Mine

A friend of mine was cold called at work today by a debt recovery company about a payday loan debt that had been granted a CCJ.
The debt is not my friends and when he rang the Court the middle name of the debtor, his DoB and last address did not match those of my friend.
He has been told to pay £80.00 and get the debt removed from Courts records - but it isn't his debt.
I have told him to ignore it as i suspect he was cold called incorrectly by a debt collector chancing their luck and using information they had found. They didn't have his home address, mobile number, home phone number etc etc only a work phone number and work email address, which they could have acquired from an online purchase my friend made. They did get the correct christian name, surname, and town of residency.
Are we correct to ignore?
Thanks

If the debt isn't your friend's then I wouldn't worry. They are trying to reach a "John Edward Smith" of Brighton, but have reached a "John Richard Smith" of Brighton. Close, but no cigar. If you've already checked with the courts that it's not your friend's as it's not the same middle name or DOB, then it can't be linked with him. The only link to him is the fact a company are clutching at straws, hoping the John Smith on the phone was the debtor, and they could have got his work phone number from anywhere. If he's really worried get him to check his Experian or Equifax credit report for free online (but cancel the free trial after viewing). But I wouldn't stress too much.0
