Cleaning Credit File

Hey folks

Okay, been doing this. I wish I'd done it a long time ago. Removing of defaults, easy enough. But, not sure about the following, and wanted to see opinions before I make another 0845 call.

Barclays have my old current account down as two payments late. So neither satisfactory nor default, and the old overdraft figure is still there. They last updated it in 2007. Clicking on more details, it does say it was settled, but I'd rather it say satisfactory overall. Is it worth the bother? I'm guessing probably yes...

If it says it's settled and the default dates are at or before your BR dates then it will drop off your files by the time your BR does, in which case there's no need to do anything.

  • Thanks for the response. Although, I wonder when the BR will drop off. My understanding was six years, but Experian says at least that.

Your BR will 'drop off' 6 years from the date of your Bankruptcy Order.

  • I know, but Experian states that it will remain on one's file for at least six years. That implies there's room for margins.

I think that phrase allows for instances where an extension may apply. I'm not sure what situations would mean BR remains on file for longer, but possibly a BRO/U could have some effect, as could suspension of discharge.

It's not something the majority of us have to worry about and probably 99% of BRs WILL drop off the credit files 6 years from BR court date.

As long as your BR is straight forward, and you are discharged after 12 months (if not earlier) then as the others have said, it will fall off your files 6 years after your BR date.
