Emloyment issues? payments in wrong tax year

I do not normally post on forums but I am hoping someone out there can provide us with some much needed advice.
My partner started working for her current employer in January 2011. She works in research in higher education. Prior to working she was a full time post-graduate student.
She has been on continual short term contracts (1 to 2 months at a time) and this has been ongoing for almost 1 year now. In these hard times she is happy to have a job and so has been fairly patient with her employer.
She worked full time on a commercial contract for her employer in February and March 2011 but because of her employer messing up her contract she was not paid until April 2011. Her contract states that she was employed for February and March. The mess up with her contract meant she had no wages for two months (she turned up everyday to work during this time and delivered all work on time for the fulfillment of the commercial contract). She was eventually paid in April and obviously in the wrong tax year due to her employer’s error and so she could not claim this tax back. She would have been able to claim all the tax back for February and March because she would not have exceeded her annual limit. As she was paid in the wrong tax year at the error of her employer she is now out of pocket by hundreds of pounds, money that is really needed now. We have been in touch with the tax office and understand that it is not the tax office error and the issue is with the employer because payment was made in wrong tax year.
If anyone can provide us with some help or advice and what your rights are as an employee it would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
