Child benefit?

I've just been checking out the debt crisis information on this site and came across this:

Child Benefit - It's paid until the 31 August following your child's 16th birthday or until the age of 20 if they're in full time education or approved training.

Does anyone know if this is the case in scotland? Child benefit stopped for both of my children when they got to 18, even though they are both still in full time education. One is is 18 and the other is 20.

Thanks

    Hi

I don't think it is different in scotland - but I know not all courses count for child benefit - this article explains when it can be claimed up to the age of 20 http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/ChildBenefitandChildTrustFund/Childbenefits/KeepingyourChildBenefituptodate/ChildBenefitafter16/DG_073812 (and the article mention areas where Scotland varies from England)

  • Sorry, cannot help but am also popping a question down in case anyone can help us both.

Mr BR is getting child benefit for his child who is 20 and away at uni (full time education). He'll be 21 next year, should this have already stopped or will it stop on his next birthday?

Edit: Actually, I think it's not child benefit, it's child tax credits, are they different?

They have to be in full time education, but this does not include higher education.

It should have stopped either when they were 20 or when they started university (whichever came first).

Oh dear, that's not good news....Mr BR tells me that he's still getting it. Will be have to repay it? Can we include it as a creditor in our DMP?

If your child is under 18 and doesn’t intend to stay on in education or training that counts for Child Benefit

Thanks Tixy, Blushingrose, midnightexpress and richard. It sounds like it stopped when it should have done - mores the pity! Never mind, it was worth checking out. BR, I think child tax credits are different. Those have also stopped for me but I'd be interested in finding out if I'm still entitled to them? :)

My eldest was 16 in July...there was no Sept child benefit for her... so it did auto stop. I called them tho and advised she was staying in full time education and the adjustment was paid in the next few days and has carried on as normal since then x im in Scotland too :)

Child benefit can be continued to be paid even if a child is not in full time education.

My daughter who is 17, had to stop her full-time college course for health reasons in April of last year and is now only at college for 8 hrs a week - which technically is not classed as full time.

We advised the Child Ben department of this and they advised that in cases like this they can continue to make payments at their discretion and i can confirm that this has happened in our case.

Thanks Scotslass and AGB863, I think the 16th birthday thing happened with my eldest son too and a phone call sorted it out (was a few years ago now and the memory appears to be failing!). I know I'm scraping around but it all helps at the moment.

Scotslass - I hope you survived the weather, it was wild wasn't it? :)
