working on different sites

Due to organisation change I am now required to travel between sites during the working day. Up till now my work were transporting people using taxis, today they have said we now need to use public transport which we pay for ourselves and they reimburse in next wage. The travelling is sporadic and can be at a moments notice. I do not always have money on me at work (or indeed have money in the bank to withdraw at the last minute) as I am on a tight budget. Where do I stand if they ask me to go somewhere last minute and I have no money to pay for a bus or a train etc, the distance between some sites is a fair bit and the money could rack up quickly if I get sent a few places in a week. Thought Id check on here before emailing union to ask them. I asked my manager and she said I would need to contact the head of service and explain to her but its embarrassing revealing I am so skint! Any opinions? It seems in organisational change they can just change your contract and you just need to go along with it

My personal opinion is that companies shouldn't just assume that people have spare change but they do.

Perhaps have a work with you LM and explain that you don't always have the spare change for the fares and perhaps they can come to an agreement.

Ask for an expenses float to cover all potential journeys for the month.
