Going back into work

I havent worked since 2004, due to raising a family etcetc
I have many qualifications under my belt
9 GCSEs, Access L3 Courses, various IT courses including pc repair/cnna/sbs as well as being self taught html/css/photoshop/web design
and i'm looking to go back into work,
I have my cv and have applied for several jobs but never get a response.
I know i have been out of work for a long time, so i was thinking maybe voluntary work would help get me back on the path to employment, but is there anything else i can do?

What sort of jobs are you looking for? Have you tailored your cv and covering letter to every job?0
-
Have you thought about applying via an agency or could you try something like web design/blogging for the time being and as something more recent to include on your CV that's IT-related (I'm assuming those are the kinds of jobs you're looking for)?0
-
Are you writing skills based CVs rather than chronological ones where your time away from employment is the first thing an employer sees?0
