Council Tax Refund

in Cutting tax
Can anyone verify if this is a viable claim.
I pay my annual council tax over a 10 month period, which gives me in effect 2 free months in February and March each year. This year is different as I am moving house on the 15th February so, having already paid my tax until the end of March, am I entitled to a 6 week rebate. On the band that I am on, this would net me about £200.00, so it is worth going for.

Absolutely right. It should also be very easy to get your refund as councils are used to doing this. One phonecall and you should be creditted within a week.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. This should automatically be done when you give them the date that you are moving house although you prob wont get it til after ou have moved. We didn't expect anything back last year when we move then a cheque for £83 dropped through the door! It was a nice surprise!
If you don't receive anything from them chase them up - after all they are quick enough to 'demand' money from us!"Life may not always be the party you wish for, but whilst here you may aswell dance"!!!

Council tax is a daily charge, ie £3.00 per day x 365 days of the year, so if you move out before the year end (31st March) you are not due for those days, however if you are moving into another property in the same authority, they will just transfer your credit to your new house instead of refunding and rebilling you. If yoy are moving to another authority they will refund you, but you will be billed for the remainder of this year by the new authority.
