    Hi Emily,

The previous post is probably more useful than my comments but thought I'd add my own experience/tips:

Firstly we don't put meat or fish in ours as we think it would smell, although apparently you can... but then we eat a 90% veggie diet so theres not much of that to deal with anyway.

Secondly if you get eggs then put the egg shells in as its a cheap (free) way of stopping the environment getting too acidic (especially if you eat onions or similar!).

To start with the worms will crawl all over the box so beware for the first couple of weeks when taking the lid off: we keep our wormery indoors, - hence the concern about smell - and I opened the box only a week after we got it and ended up spraying the whole kitchen with worms... yuk!

Don't forget to 'wee' them regularly, this stops it getting too damp for them and it's really good fertiliser, our house plants love it. Don't know the effect on garden plants as we don't have one.

Also if it gets too full give them a break and if it gets too damp try putting in some scrumpled up newspaper.

    Good luck! ;)

    Hi Emily,

Thanks for all the help but who's emily?
  • You can buy worms, acidity regulator and lots of other accessories, plus there is advice etc from www.wigglywigglers.co.uk

  • Thanks for all the replies. This wormery has come with no instructions so I do not have a clue how to start and all the sites I've seen don't really give instructions. Also do I need to buy the worms as I really begrudge ordering them if I could dig some up from the garden. How many would I need?
    Many many thanks.

    Hi

I bought a wormery last September from The Green Gardener site: http://www.greengardener.co.uk/worms.htm There's lots of information on there.
