Notice Period

Hello all,
I have been called today and offered a new job, which starts on Thursday. My current contract is temporary until the 31st of December, and has a weeks notice. My past experience is that this is not iron cast. Some others have left already without giving any notice at all for other jobs, just called up and said they are not coming back.
I want to give my notice today in writting and work my notice today and tomorrow. How do you think I should approach this? The new job has longer term prospects and more permanent, whereas with the current role they would have laid me off on the 31st of December.
Thankyou in advance.

i would write something along the lines of.
unfortunately, due to an unforeseen opportunity i have to give notice effective immediately. i appreciate this leaves you short, however in the current economic climate i cannot afford to miss this opportunity.
then finish off with the usual things about enjoying the job, youll miss working there etcBirthdays are good for you. Statistics show that the people who have the most live the longest.

You could go all the way and just say that you've been offered a new job with a guaranteed long term employment and that while you like this current job, if they can't offer similar you'll have to take the opportunity. It could be the case that they decide you are valuable and want to keep you on permanently and then you don't have to cause a problem or possibly get a poor reference in the future
