I don't feel embarrassed about shielding my PIN at all, but my partner thinks that I'm being rude, as even when he's the only person who could see it, I still shield it out of habit. As with others I have a large purse I can hold over the keypad -another good reason for having one, other than holding all my store reward cards!

I always hide my pin at a checkout or ATM .. but also when ive been a cashier stepped back when customers enter there pin ...
  • Ever since they stopped accepting signatures when the chip was "broken" (funny what a microwave will do....) and stopped accepting cheques (grrrr)
I've covered my pin with my entire wallet, then entering the pin with three fingers, all held over 123, then 456, then 789.

About the only thing someone would be able to tell from that is a little about the order of the numbers.

I then always try to press enter with my thumb so there's nothing to compare the tendon flexes against. If I'm feeling nervous for any reason I also add extra ghost presses as well.

What I want to know is how you can test if you've broken the touch-payment thing on new visa cards now. I've tried hitting it with a hammer which I've heard works, but there's no easy way of testing.

I write down on a bit of paper : card pin numbers: pin 1, pin , 2 and so on and put the paper in my wallet.
Knowing a thief will think he has hit the jackpot, all the numbers are hogwash, and the machine will eat the card.
stupid is as stupid does, a thief will try cash first and try all 4 pin numbers on each card.
    Thanks, threat over

Fine if your wallet is just stolen but in Martin's scenario the card was snatched after the thief had seen the pin being entered so false pin numbers in the wallet are useless.

As to the question - I rarely use cash machines now - don't use cash if I can help it- but when I did I would always hold my wallet above the keypad to shield from hidden cameras, and if necessary cup my hands to hide it if their were other people queueing.

I'm sometimes a bit more casual when paying for things. If there doesn't seem to be anyone with a direct view I don't always bother covering it, though I do still sometimes use my wallet to shield the view.
  • I don't want/have to run the risk of anyone seeing me keying in my pin code frequently. I go to the bank on average once a month, takes out sufficient cash to pay for my relatively small transactions in shops, and restaurants to cover me for that period.

I'm not embarrassed to hide my pin, but I need to see which keys I'm pressing, AND remember which pin to use.

I normally hold my card wallet over the ATM / Shop keypad with one hand whilst typing in the numbers with the other.

I don't care what anybody thinks as I am protecting myself best I can.

When I saw the title of this thread I thought "!!!!!!?" I would be embarrassed NOT to shield the PIN entry.

Perhaps some people have too much money and too little sense.

Exactly my thoughts. Some people have a bizarre sense of politeness.
