Flipping websites, who does it?

Options
Does anyone have any experience of 'flipping' websites, that is buying them on sites like flippa.com and sprucing them up/monetizing them/selling them for profit?

I have been reading up on it alot recently and it seems like it can be very lucrative, with little investment needed in the beginning.

So anyone do/done/tried it?

Cheers

I have not seen this before but I have a sold a few sites over time and I have kept one main one and I still make a bit off of it though I do very little now. What I found was that the sites themselves were worth very little and it was the domain name that had the real value and not the site. I also found that what I thought domains were worth was way above what the market though I would tread very carefully with this as my opinion is that anyone who is looking to buy a ready set up website either wants to pay nothing or wants to pay based on the turnover so buying a site that does not look too hot and making it look hot I think is a big risk.

Since quitting my job to try and do this full time eight weeks ago then website flipping is on my "to do list" for 2012.

It seems the critical point is the website has to have some revenue for someone wanting to buy it OR it has to have serious potential to earn revenue.

I've seen people knock up a Wordpress site with premium theme, stick some adsense on it and after a few months sell it for a few hundred dollars but the revenue is important.

Yes, a site needs to have atleast 3months plus of revenue trickling in OR alot of traffic. It doesnt have to be just adsense, it can be CPA or amazon affiliates etc etc. I am really interested into getting into it, and found a highly appraised ebook called "killer flipping secrets", but its $197 :O.

Fancy having a chat sometime sew109 about getting started etc? I found a FANTASTIC forum about website flipping I can point you too.

An important aspect of web site value is also the domain name. If you can grab a site with a good domain then great.

You could build a site from scratch for very little outlay, and try to sell that on in 6 months time after it has some revenue stats.

You will need to show evidence of traffic and income for the site you intend to see and if it's all good then you can probably sell your site for around 12 times the monthly income you got for it. This obviously gives you a bulk sum of money but I prefer to keep the sites and view them as an investment with a nice stream of money coming in every month.

Of course if you are looking to buy websites then you must always look for potential and how you can improve the site and the amount it earns. Some sites will never increase their revenue due to their subject and the market they are targeting, so I would never view anything as a 'sure thing'.
